Scaling/Root Planing
Scaling and Root Planing is required to remove plaque and calculus under the gums. Scaling and Root planning involves thorough root surface cleaning that removes tartar and plaque from periodontal pockets and cleans bacterial toxins. The procedure reduces inflammation and bacterial debris below the gum line and provides a smooth and clean surface for the gum to reattach. This treatment is meant to help gum pockets heal to restore a healthy gum line. Scaling and Root Planing therapy removes large bacteria laden deposits adhered to the tooth root. Periodontal hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers are used to remove deposits in this treatment.
Scaling and Root Planing treatment may comprise of more than one appointment. For scaling, a dental hygienist thoroughly removes all plaque, bacterial toxins and tartar deposits from your teeth and root surfaces. In Root Planing, a hygienist smoothes all rough areas on your roots’ surfaces as plain root surfaces prevent bacteria and tartar from adhering below the gum line. This allows gums to heal quickly and reattach more firmly. On your follow-up visit, the healing of your gums and the status of your pockets is checked. If your gum tissue responds well, you may not require further treatment.
